I'm a freelance theatre director born and raised in the Scottish Borders.
I have directed new and existing plays across multiple Fringe, Off-West End and regional theatres, and in 2015 was Trainee Director to Rupert Goold (Artistic Director - Almeida Theatre) on his critically-acclaimed production of 'Medea'.
I am also the Founder of COMMON, an arts organisation which exists to support the UK theatre industry in achieving greater socio-economic diversity, and help artists from working-class backgrounds like my own build sustainable careers in theatre: www.commontheatre.co.uk
Alongside directing, I work extensively as a production dramaturg to support independent artists and the UK's leading arts organisations, having worked with venues including The Young Vic and Orange Tree Theatre.
I gained a crucial understanding of international dramaturgy whilst working with Nils Haarmann (Dramaturge - Shaubuhne, Berlin) on 'Shadows: Eurydice Speaks', a new production adapted by Alice Birch for the Schaubuhne (Berlin) and directed by Katie Mitchell in 2016.
I also regularly run workshops for The Young Vic Theatre to support the career development of emerging dramaturgs. I most recently facilitated a series of workshops exploring the practice of dramaturgy in British theatre, where I was joined by esteemed artists including Lyndsey Turner, Bryony Kimmings, David Lan, Katie Mitchell and Stewart Pringle, who offered an insight into their own dramaturgical approaches to developing work.
